Ladders: Up or Down, That Is the Questionnn

I thought this week it might be fun to do a more interactive blog (jacking off is fun, but your best friend isn't always yourself).

We're going to put out (maybe in more ways than one) some of our favorite Bijou gay porn scenes.

Then, you can share yours, and we'll even link to some of those clips on our websites on our Twitter page.

Madam Bubby's Picks

I'm into dominance and submission big time (the big is more mental that physical, but I do appreciate size, especially muscles!).

Turned On!

There's a scene from Al Parker's movie Turned On! that always gets me going. Now Al, for me, and I might claim many others, is a total top man (and I just don't mean fucking): he exudes a dominant, but not so much in your face (but then, who wouldn't want his glorious cock in your face) masculinity, but one that doesn't need much overcooked “on your knees, boy” proclamations.

But what makes this scene so fascinating for me is Al submitting, and submitting, endlessly... a hunger that is never satisfied, but is satisfied in its own hunger. Kind of the effect Al creates when he wields his mighty cock...

What is Al doing? In a locker room with male body parts behind every locker door, Parker and Sky Dawson (the man of Al's dreams in this movie) service rows (a sort of chorus line) of humpy, athletic men in jockstraps. It's a fantasy, but what it makes it even more enticing for me is the jockstraps. They conceal but also show.

Pictures From the Black Dance

Now, another movie, from Roger Earl's Dungeons of Europe trilogy, Pictures from the Black Dance, contains a scene which really gets me going. What's interesting is not so much the leathersex itself, but the overall dominance/submission dynamic I find erotic:

In the last scene, Dick Johnson is leading a hooded guy in a bondage/body suit. This is Tony Starr, who had previously been a dominant in the movie! The last dance, the climactic one. The slapping sound is its rhythmic accompaniment. They are still in the dungeon, but the wall looks like fall foliage. After what looks like a whiff of poppers, Johnson powerfully creates total submission; by pulling bottom up by hook on bondage suit. He barks one command that seems to pull most of the action together: SIT!

Johnson then attaches Starr to the board, and one hears a stomping and slamming sound with his powerful boots. He then, with amazing confidence, picks up the guy and then places him on the floor.

This lying down position, especially when contrasted with a standing position, is one of stripping away of conventional social norms, which often occurs in BDSM role playing. Johnson now has his bottom in this position of total submission in order for him to wield his power, by pulling the cock and balls on triangle attached to his cock and balls; this tension shows that Johnson himself actually reciprocating once he has shown his power.

Miriam Webster's Picks

I'm particularly interested in porn directors who use sexual explicitness as a vehicle for artistic expression. I also find emotionally raw states (such as love, sadness, or fear) to be intriguing mental spaces in which to tap into eroticism, the heightened emotional state acting as a potential sexual enhancer. The two scenes I'm featuring play with these approaches.

the Idol

The entirety of Tom DeSimone's The Idol is a well-crafted build from sexual isolation and frustration to sexual freedom and open expression, each successive sex scene progressing the main character, Gary, along in his sexual journey.

The final erotic encounter in The Idol is a romantic and bittersweet one. We know from the beginning that college track star Gary will die at a young age. The film is structured around his funeral, and this final flashback to a moment in his life shows him in bed with his lover (who has been longing for him from afar in the flashbacks until this point). The lighting is soft and blue, with the soundtrack pared down to simply the thunderstorm outdoors accompanied by their murmurings and moans, and the camera pans lingeringly over their entwined bodies. They take their time kissing and fucking to the sounds of rumbling thunder, rain, and wind. DeSimone's strong sense of erotic pacing is highlighted here, creating a potent crescendo of sexual tension. The scene ends as the two collapse into each other in exhaustion after climax and the soundtrack kicks in with a song echoing the claim, "I could never leave you." We know that this statement is untrue. The story has finally brought these men together and has brought Gary to terms with his own sexuality, but these journeys are about to end.

This scene is visually gorgeous, atmospheric, and emotionally effective. Even the sentimentality of some of the devices (the slow-mo at the end, the romantic dialogue) doesn't interfere, but, rather, feels perfectly earned and adds to the ambiance. This is a brilliant example of scene that is, at once, melancholic, romantic, and erotic.
The Destroying Angel

Peter de Rome's The Destroying Angel is easily one of the most unusual films in the Bijou catalog. It tells a Poe-inspired story of a priest on sabbatical who engages in mushroom trips and sex, which hauntingly meld together.

The film uses sexual explicitness to evoke as much horror as eroticism, playing with themes of repression/compulsion and revulsion/attracton. The scene where Caswell (the priest) fucks a young man he meets at a party is deeply unsettling and captivating. The two men eat mushrooms and Caswell observes his doppelganger entering into the action. "How many of us do you see?" he asks his partner. "Just you and me," is the calm reply. But we see the friend jerking off two Caswells at once, as the camera pans over to his double in an eerie moment of trick photography. Caswell seemingly watches himself from both positions. Both Caswells are alternately terrified, confused, maniacal, and sexually ravenous. Horrible yowls and laughs echo on the soundtrack and Caswell comes on his double's face, but won't stop trying to have sex even after his partner is clearly spent. His appetite is insatiable. It takes a sudden cut to achieve an end to the scene, which could have continued interminably in a wild hallucinatory state of unending erotic hunger.

This scene is a nightmarish distortion of sex, frenzied and made of pure compulsion, with Caswell watching himself in horror as if in shock at what he is doing. He can't reconcile himself with his sexuality and it bursts forth from him as if another him has been created, one made of his own repressed sexual side, his shadow self a creature of erotic monstrosity that can only be fed by being given more, more, until eventual destruction must occur.

Steven Toushin's Picks

Bijou owner Steven Toushin's selections are from two additional Steve Scott films (Turned On! also being by Scott): Wanted and Inches.

Wanted

In Wanted, the scene shows brutal, sadistic warden Jack Wrangler as he makes an inmate suck his cock, rifle in hand, then fucks him, while he's supposed to be guarding a chain gang. This scene is especially notable in its depiction of an erotic prison fantasy between warden and prisoner that is not as typically found between men in films.

Inches

In Inches, its the cruisey barroom scene near the end of the film. This scene is relatable to those who were present in the era or who have experienced bar backroom action, capturing a sense of realism in the small details of the scene which make it feel like an actual '70s-era bar backroom, with anonymous sex going on everywhere.

Long Hair on Men: Dangerous and Powerful

Rydar Hansen

Now, this guy was one superstud, but also, from what I have read, multitalented. Born in Germany as Wolfgang Praegert in 1957, of an artist father, and the young Wolfgang apparently exhibited acrylic paintings at exhibitions in both France and Germany. He lived in Paris (to which all artists gravitate at some point), and then emigrated to New York City. He studied opera there briefly. (I am impressed. I wonder if he was a tenor, a baritone, or a bass.)

He then got into gay porn, making his first appearance in Chain Reactions after moving to Los Angeles. Now, why would he get into porn? He was one studly macho guy (uncut, hairy chest, but also the Marlon Brandoesque lips, woof!), of course, but maybe the art and the opera didn't quite work out as well for him.

He worked with Al Parker for Surge Studios, making appearances in Head Trips and Strange Places, Strange Things.

He was even Mr. California Drummer in 1985 (showing his versatility), and, speaking of leather, he showed up at the First Annual Gay Erotic Film Festival and Awards in leather regalia leading Chris Burns on a leash. Chris then sat on a dildo. Ah, those were the days…
Rydar Hansen with Chris Burns on leash

But those were the eighties, and the AIDS epidemic was in full swing. Rydar, like so many gay porn stars of the era, succumbed to complications from the AIDS virus. He died in 1989 in Ventura, California. Before the died, he did much traveling, and he even made a feature-length biographical video showcasing the places he visited and his reactions to them.

My favorite Rydar moment, from Strange Places, Strange Things: Rydar Hansen lies on a doctor's (Latin hunk Melchor) examination table, next, thinking about circumcision to please his lover. The doctor convinces Hansen against it through a series of foreskin games that include docking (interestingly photographed for skin fans). Gotta love that uncut cock!

The action and the intensity between the two men is wonderful and it works well between these two that know how to have with their hooded eagles.

I've Come To Say: Yes, We Have Bananas

I've Come To Say: Yes, We Have Bananas

Hottie Filipino-Canadian model Jason Godfrey pulled into a gas station in order to head nature's call. Much to his surprise, this Shell gas station bathroom in Bohol, Philippines resembles a luxurious “den” or “sitting room” that might appear in an upper middle class home in Winnetka, Illinois or the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

Luxury bathroom in Bohol, Philippines

Oh my goodness: the neatly arranged magazines, the paintings … and according to Godfrey, he heard soft piano music playing and smelt some kind of “menthol” aroma.

Godfrey said, “This toilet is better than my room. It’s better than my entire apartment actually.”

Now, some might call this room ridiculous, given its location, but let's think about it: shouldn't the bathroom really be the most important room, anywhere? You can't deny the basic bodily functions that occur there … plus, the Bohol bathroom is a men's bathroom. Yes, a men's room.

I always thought it rather unfair that, at least from my viewing beginning at young age such rooms in the movies or television, that the ladies' rooms always seemed outright luxurious compared to the men's rooms. Why did the ladies' rooms always contain sofas and chairs and lamps and gilded mirrors … they were places to hang out. You could even take a nap there.

Luxury ladies room, Valley of the Dolls

We men had to content ourselves with rows of urinals (not that I am denying certain views and subsequent interactions that could occur there), cold tile floors, graffiti carved into the stalls, and brown paper towels.

Public restroom stalls

(I later found out by asking that in most places the ladies' rooms were far from luxurious. In fact, one woman told me she thought they were actually dirtier than the men's rooms. I didn't check to find out.)

Now, this type of men's bathroom of course has it's own pornographic public sex appeal (oh, those gloryholes), but I would rather do it in a luxury bathroom.

I've decorated my bathroom attractively in a palm tree/tropical plant theme, but it's small. There's even a tiny boudoir lamp on the toilet tank.

But I want a bathroom big enough to contain a settee and maybe a wing chair. Also, I want shelves of live tropical plants, and some music source. Maybe even a TV. The late opera legend Maria Callas in her luxury Parisian mansion had such a bathroom, minus the TV.

Settee in bathroom

In other words, I should have the option of staying in that room all day. Now, food might be a problem, but maybe I could have a dressing room adjacent to the bathroom with a mini-fridge and a microwave.

And to complete the fantasy, Jason Godfrey will be on call.

Mars: The First Gay Leather Magazine

MARS:
THE FIRST GAY LEATHER MAGAZINE

Chuck Renslow

Chuck Renslow, gay activist and a pioneering figure of the gay leather community, founded Mars magazine in May of 1963. Renslow definitely pushed the homoerotic envelope of his time with this cutting-edge vintage gay physique publication that was instrumental in both creating and disseminating the image of the gay leatherman.

The magazine combines the classic smooth muscle jock physiques of the physique magazines with what became the iconic image of the gay leatherman: a super- or hypermasculine look emphasizing a well-developed physique, oftentimes facial hair, a generous endowment, and motorcycle gear: heavy boots and jacket.

It featured art by Tom of Finland and Dom Orejudos aka the artist Etienne and Renslow’s partner, among others. Several of the models hailed from Renslow’s photography or “physique house,” Kris Studio.

Renslow discovered many of his models, such as Ralph Kleiner and Paul Ferguson (one of the murderers of silent film legend Ramon Navarro) at bodybuilding circuit competitions such as Mr. Chicago.

Contents of one of the last issues, Issue 21, September 1966:

Mars magazine, September 1966

This issue still offers an article on physical culture entitled “Exercising the Abdomen,” focusing on leg raises: short on text, larger on pics of a naked guy doing them (no posing strap in site, the genitalia deftly covered by the camera angle and the position of the legs; note the hint of pubic hair). Pretty desultory compared to the much more detailed articles that appeared in the more conventional physique magazines of the period. But the point is the picture, really, by this stage of the game!

The editorial on page three and on pages 42-47 shows the still difficult issues with censorship, despite the MANual vs. O'Day decision in 1962. The text reports that Ralph Ginzburg, producer of the erotic magazines Eros and Liason (the text reads “artistically produced”) another covering term for these types of publications), was convicted on a charge of mailing obscene materials in 1963. The prosecutor was the late great Robert Kennedy; wow!

The above tidbit shows how one is continually uncovering parts of history that change one's view of a famous personage around which certain myths develop. The Supreme Court upheld his conviction by a 5 to 4 decision. The text also gives detailed analysis of the different judges' reasonings for their decision. The argument's thrust here is the ruling's unconstitutionality, despite the nuances of the judge's interpretation of this First Amendment issue

Guild Book Services, one of the few openly gay companies during this time period, offers their usual insert in this magazine. The review of the book Homosexual: Personal Case Histories of Homosexuals is most interesting, as it seems to offer, for the reviewer, a really wild gamut of deviations (including BDSM), distasteful but without an overtly moralistic commentary. Though the comments of the psychiatrists that accompany these stories probably endorse the gay equals sick hypothesis prevalent during this period, which one could definitely claim is supported by the unusual evidence here!

This issue, focusing on a motorcycle theme, contains stunning homoerotic leather/fetish art by Luger, Orsen, and Tom of Finland. On pages 10-11, there is a classic Etienne, which he painted for a local bistro in Chicago (the legendary Gold Coast Bar?).

Gold Coast Bar mural - Etienne

Pictures from the movie Motorcycle Hero (take of more of the clothes and one would have a gay porn movie, but then, in this case, the leather gear would stay on). A young man dons his sleeping friend's (what a woofy hunk) leather gear ... and ... much is left to the imagination.

The magazine ceased publication in 1966 or 1967.

Retrostuds of the Past: Focus on Leo Ford

Retrostuds of the Past: Focus on Leo Ford

The appeal of blonds. Flaxen hair, the color of wheat. Usually with blue eyes.

Blonde bombshells. Dumb blondes. Ditzy blondes. Marilyn Monroe!

Blond beach beefcake. Vikings. Nordic supermen.  Tab Hunter!

But they are also portrayed quite often in the movies especially as villains

I am thinking of that bunny boiler Alex Forrest in Fatal Attraction, and more recently, TwoFace in The Dark Knight

So many stereotypes about blonds and blondes. What's the fascination? Some people really glorify that hair color, even while making fun of those who are born with it and making them evil. Perhaps some envy going on there? You know, I love and hate you because I'll never be naturally blond like you.

The gay blond pornstar kind of fits more in with the clean cut blond beefcake image that harks back to the muscle beach culture of the 1950s and 60s. Later, the muscles became less prominent and the skinnier youngman became the ideal.

The first gay porn studies like Falcon picked up on both images, and as the seventies progressed, the hair grew longer and the image became less clean cut. Think of the white trash blond Robert Prion type, still the boy next door, but a real sex pig.

One blond porn star, who, as his obituary in Manshots claims, exemplified the more clean cut blond image that resurfaced in the “GQ-yuppie” eighties, was Leo Hilgeford, who shortened his name to Leo Ford when he began to make adult films.

Leo Ford

Leo was pretty much a phenomenon, cranking out one legendary porn classic after another.

Jamie Wingo and Leo Ford in Flashbacks

His career began when he and this then-lover, Jamie Wingo, appeared in J. Brian's classic 1981 Flashbacks. He also appeared in Blonds Do It BestSailor in the Wild, and Games.

In Games, Leo Ford portrays a swimmer participating in the first San Francisco Gay Games.

His sex scenes are phenomenal, totally unforced and natural, and he even gets one with the legendary Al Parker, who plays a photographer.

Leo also inherited some slides from J. Brian. When he died, he was planning to make them into a video.

Bijouworld now owns these slides, and we have scanned them into our digital archives.

Leo died of head injuries sustained in a traffic accident in 1991. He and his lover, Craig Markle, were riding on their motorcycle when another vehicle sideswiped them.

Check out our website for Games and Flashbacks, and for other titles (Leo is also featured  2015 Retrostuds Calendar as the February coverboy) that show those sometimes sexily evil blonds do it best and have more fun.
