In the nineties, I routinely would buy a COLT Men calendar, mostly the ones featuring leather guys. But the guys could definitely be COLT Men without the gear. They all had that look. Some call it gay macho, some call it rough, some call it hypermasculine.  Not that the calendar guys (macho pin-ups?) were necessarily all Castro clones of the seventies with their thick moustaches, tight Levis, leather vests, and heavy boots, but they are perhaps their brothers or sons or cousins. The daddy of these guys was the late Jim French who founded what has since 1967 been called the COLT Studio Group. Before that year, Jim began doing erotic work under the pseudonym Arion, he began a mail-order company called Luger, after the German pistol.  Luger was a hit, but French sold his share to a partner and launched COLT Studio in 1967. By 1967, after the famous MANual vs. O'Day case, full-frontal nudity began to appear more often in homoerotic publications, and Jim French was thus more free to manifest his erotic vision. As a photographer, he often shot under the name Rip Colt, choosing models that were undoubtedly a contrast to the smooth young “lavender sweater” preppy types that were popular during the late sixties. His models were muscular like Bob Mizer's California beach hunks, but their bodies were hairier and brawnier, their sex appeal rougher, their cocks huge. COLT started in New York City, moved to Los Angeles for twenty-five years, and is now based in San Francisco, California. By the 1970s, the COLT man was the ideal of many gay men, and the porn stars of that time, whose sexuality reflected the desires of their audience, often showcased themselves as COLT men before, during, or after their film appearances. Massive hung muscle god Gordon Grant, who appears in one of Bijou Video's classic flicks Hot Truckin', was a COLT model.  His sex partner in the threeway scene, Nick Rodgers, was another COLT model.  The iconic Bruno, who made few porn movies but became something of an omnipresent COLT man pin-up, was a major COLT model of the seventies.  And the greatest of them all, Al Parker, wouldn't have been Al Parker had not Rip Colt discovered him when was Andrew Okun!
