Becoming one of the best directors in the 1990s because of his flare for unique drama and a command of narrative, Jerry Douglas actually began making films in the late 1970s, for example, The Back Row. In 1970, the groundbreaking erotic play Score, which blatantly featured bisexuality, was playing in New York City's Martinique Theater. Jerry Douglas wrote and directed it. This play featured Sylvester Stallone in a brief role, as a telephone repairman. 
Score was later made into a movie (1974, directed by Radley Metzger) which was later released in both soft-core and hard-core (male frontal nudity, fellatio, of course) versions. Douglas made three films during that time, the Golden Age of Gay Porn, but did not begin making gay porn films again until twenty years later, in 1989, with Fratimony. Concentrating on narrative, character development and good action, as well as hot sex action, Douglas brought the “coming out” process as a narrative to a greater, more realistic height of naturalism and spontaneity. Delving into his characters, thus not making typical loop-type flicks, he stressed reality and truism in his films. His models won praise for their acting and even won best acting awards from various gay porn outfits (Tim Lowe, Michael Braun and Joey Stefano).
